Joan W. Futch, Ed.D., RN, 63 of Valdosta, died Saturday, April 7, 2007. She was born in 1943 in Sparks, to the late Lory & Bessie Williams, and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Dr. Futch was retired from the Valdosta State University College of Nursing and worked for Hospice of South Georgia. Dr. Futch received her Ed.D. from VSU in 2003 while teaching there. Dr. Futch had also received her Nursing Administration Advanced Certification from the American Nurses Association.
Survivors include her two sisters, Mary Fender, of Sparks and Nellie Fisher of Tifton; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger & Ann Futch of Ellijay; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy & Phil Joyner of Atlanta and Pam & Preston Yawn of Valdosta; eight grandchildren and their spouses; and 15 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her husband, Heavard Eschol Futch, a sister, Ellie White, and a daughter, Sandra Lee.
Funeral services for Dr. Futch will be held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 10, 2007 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. Benny Olliff, Rev. Jim Schappaugh and Rev. Skip Van Nus will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Birch Church Cemetery, in Jeff Davis County. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 until 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 205 Woodrow Wilson Dr., Valdosta, GA 31602, or the VSU College of Nursing Foundation, 1300 N.
