Jason Lawrence Meadors, 91, of Valdosta, died on Monday, September 26, 2016 at his home. Born in LaGrange Georgia on August 23, 1925, he was the son of the late Leon Lawrence Meadors and Mary Kate Owensby Meadors. He received a B.S. from Emory University in 1945 and graduated from Emory University Medical School in 1948. Dr. Meadors served his internship and residency at Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospital from 1948 until 1954. During his residency he served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1951 to 1953. In 1953 Dr. Meadors was awarded a one-year Fellowship by the American Cancer Society. Certified by the American Board of Radiology in 1954 he then joined the Norwood Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. From 1956 through 1957 he was affiliated with the Birmingham Radiological Group and held a faculty position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. Subsequently he accepted the position of radiologist at Vereen Memorial Hospital in Moultrie, Georgia from 1957 to 1972. Dr. Meadors relocated to Valdosta, Georgia in 1972 and was one of the original physicians of the Valdosta Radiology Associates and was on staff at South Georgia Medical until his retirement in 1991.
As a member of the First United Methodist Church of Valdosta, Dr. Meadors served on the Official Board and on the Board of Trustees of the church. He also served as a Director of First State Bank and Trust Co. of Valdosta from 1981 until 1991. He was active in many organizations including the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, American Medical Association, the Medical Association of Georgia and the South Georgia Medical Society. Dr. Meadors was an avid cyclist and whitewater canoe enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Mary Standifer "Polly" Meadors; daughter and son-in-law, Penelope Meadors Wright and Will Wright of Edisto Island, South Carolina; daughter Rebecca Meadors of Valdosta and friend, Thomas Beeckler of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; granddaughter Margaret Faenza of Savannah, Georgia; a grandson and spouse, Brooks and Ashley Wright of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; granddaughter and husband Rebecca and Robert Goings of Columbia, South Carolina; and four great grandchildren, Eliza Dantzler Wright, Brooks Standifer Wright, Madeleine Grace Goings and Grayson Middleton Goings.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Charles Adams will officiate. A private mass for the family will follow at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Blakely with interment in the Blakely City Cemetery in Early County. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church on Thursday morning from 9 AM until 10 AM prior to the service.
