Dr. Hugh King McIntyre, Jr was born May 23, 1941- the oldest child of Hugh King McIntyre and Sarah Owens McIntyre. He is survived by his sister, Sarah McIntyre Dasher - also known as Sally. A life-long bachelor, Hugh doted on Sally's three children - Carolyn, Ken and Mike and five grandchildren - Owen, Ella, Gavin, Braeden and Isaac. They in turn loved their uncle Hugh.
A life-long resident of Valdosta, Hugh graduated from Valdosta High School and Valdosta State College (now University). He obtained a Master’s degree in Biology from the University of Georgia and a doctorate in Marine Biology from Auburn University. Hugh was a professor of biology at Valdosta State for his entire career. He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was the faculty sponsor for TKE. He was faculty advisor for many of the Valdosta State pre-medical students. Hugh was also an active member of the Valdosta Kiwanis Club.
Hugh's greatest love was travel. Beginning with a family trip across the country to the 1960 Seattle World's Fair, he managed to see most of the United States during his lifetime. In the summer of 1968, he began his international travels by using a Eurail pass to crisscross Europe by train. Over the subsequent years, especially after his retirement from Valdosta State, he visited every continent except Antarctica and most of the world's nations. Among his favorite trips were visits to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Galapagos Islands, and Easter Island.
Over the last several years, Hugh's health gradually declined and greatly limited his mobility. He passed peacefully from this life on January 31, 2023.
His family expresses their gratitude to the management and staff of Langdale Place where Hugh lived for several years and to his many friends who visited him there and assisted him in so many ways. We also appreciate the care provided by Fellowship Home and Hospice of Valdosta for the last weeks of his life.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Sunday, February 5, 2023 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
