Dr. Glen Willis Herrin

October 29, 1933 — May 15, 2014

Dr. Glen Willis Herrin, 80, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Thursday, May 15, 2014, at his residence. Dr. Herrin retired from Albany State University. He had previously served on the faculty of Valdosta State University where he was head of the school of Business Administration for a time and was instrumental in founding what is now the Valdosta Educator's Credit Union. He also served on the Valdosta City Board of Education from 1972 to 1978 during which time he championed the establishment of special educational programs for gifted students.

Dr. Herrin was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in both the 101st Airborne Division and the 6th United States Cavalry Regiment. He received his PhD. from the University of Alabama in 1965, where he served under the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant as the tutorial coordinator for the University's football program.

Born on October 29, 1933 in Blackshear, Georgia, he was the son of the late Hezzie R. and Bessie Brown Herrin. Dr. Herrin is survived by two sons, Col. Barry Herrin of Sandy Springs, Georgia and Rev. Michael Herrin of Port Gibson, Mississippi; grandson, Scott Herrin and granddaughter, Abigail Herrin, both of Roswell, Georgia; a sister, Gloria Jean Thompson of Manning, South Carolina; a brother-in-law, Ed Wildes of Jacksonville, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 313 N. Patterson St, Valdosta, Georgia 31601. Interment will follow at 5:00 p.m. at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Blackshear, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. The family requests that gifts in lieu of flowers be made to Hospice of South Georgia, 2263 Pineview Drive, Valdosta, Georgia 31602 in memory of Glen Herrin.
