Dr. Emory Fowler Thompson

Dr. Emory Fowler Thompson, 82, of Valdosta, died on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in West Virginia on December 28, 1926, he moved to Valdosta at a young age when his father established a medical practice in Valdosta. Emory received his elementary and high school education in the Valdosta school system. He was a graduate of Emory at Oxford, Atlanta, Georgia.

Emory served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. Following his discharge from military service he attended Emory University in Atlanta and taught at Emory, Jr. in Valdosta while awaiting acceptance to medical college. Upon his graduation from Medical College of Georgia he interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. When finished with specialized training, Dr. Thompson returned to Valdosta and joined his father's medical practice.

In 1994 Dr. Thompson closed his medical practice due to health issues. He continued to work at Valdosta State University Infirmary before his complete retirement. His hobbies were numerous and included his love of music, sailing, sculpturing, reading and being a pilot. He was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church.

Survivors are his wife Senta, to whom he was married for 60 years; one son, Frank of Valdosta, one sister, Mary Thompson Ward of Lakeland, Florida; a favorite cousin, Judy Stephenson of the Atlanta area; several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. E. F. Thompson.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Willie Beasley will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
