Dr. Edward M. Berckman, 78, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Shand's Hospital in Gainesville, Florida following a lengthy illness. He was born on February 7, 1931 in Hangzhou, China to missionary parents, the late James and Ruth Rice Berckman, and he grew up in China and Alabama. Dr. Berckman received his PhD from the University of Chicago and was a retired Episcopal minister and college English professor having taught in India and Valdosta State. He was a volunteer for the Alzheimer Caregiver Time Out (ACTO) association and was a member of the Tai Chi society. Mr. Berckman was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Katherine Berckman of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Dennis Hunteman of Dallas, Texas; son, Daniel Berckman of Savannah; daughter, Sarah Berckman of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Reid Hunteman, Kyle Hunteman, Daniel Berckman, and Charlie Katherine Berckman; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Jean Berckman of Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Edward M. Berckman will be held at 4 p.m. on Thurday, December 3, 2009 at Christ Episcopal Church with The Rev. Peter Ingeman officiating. The burial will follow in the church urn garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Caregiver Time Out (ACTO) 100 E. Park Avenue Valdosta, Georgia 31602.
