Dr. Alfred "Al" "Mr. Mac" Barnett McRae, 85, of Lake Park, died at his home on Tuesday, April 6, 2010. Born on September 16, 1924 in Palmetto, FL, he was the son of the late John Duncan and Carrie Emma Norris McRae. Dr. McRae graduated from Lynchburg College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He obtained his Master of Education degree in Vocational Education in 1980 and his Education Specialist degree in Education Administration in 1983 from Valdosta State College. Dr. McRae obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education Administration in 1993 from Georgia State University. He was retired from Valdosta State University as a Computer Science professor. Dr. McRae was instrumental in starting the Education program at the Kings Bay campus. He was an avid golfer at the Francis Lake Golf Course and a member of the Hustlers Golf Club. Dr. McRae was a veteran of the United States Navy and United States Air Force and was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Patty" McRae of Lake Park; daughter and son-in-law, Judith Faye McRae Little and Billy Little of Lynchburg, VA; sons and daughter-in-law, Alfred Barnett, Jr. and Linda McRae of Charleston, SC and Riley Llewellyn McRae of Goodspring, TN; step-daughter and her husband, Jane and Skip Edmonds of Nashville; half-sister and her husband, Carolyn Faye McRae Cummings and Kevin Cummings of West Palm Beach, FL; half-brother and his wife, Larry Jerome and Elaine McRae of Green Acres City, FL. Dr. McRae is also survived by his 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his son, Jackie McRae; step-mother, Evie Jane Ferrell McRae; sisters, Virginia McRae, Gwendolyn Ruth McRae Kersey; brothers, John Duncan McRae, Jr. and a half-brother, Edgar Monroe McRae. The family would like to thank Georgia Home Health, Bethany Hospice, Dr. Surratt, family, friends and good neighbors for their love and care.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, April 9, 2010 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Father Tim Blanton officiating. Burial will follow in Nashville City Cemetery.
