Douglas Aulston Rice

March 27, 1922 — February 21, 2017

Douglas Aulston Rice, 94, of Saint Clair, Michigan and formerly of Valdosta died at Holiday Retirement Blue Water Lodge in Fort Gratiot, Michigan on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. Born in Lakeland, Florida on March 27, 1922. He was the son of the late Roy Alston Rice and Mary Ellen O'Neil Rice. Mr. Rice completed his High School by GED in Auburn, Alabama and attended Auburn University. He served in U.S.Navy during WWII in the Aleutian Islands and San Diego, CA. He served on the Auburn City Police force during the 1950's. He owned and managed Doug's Standard Service station in Opelika, Alabama during the 1960's. He worked on the Farley Nuclear Power Plant Alabama and Midland Michigan Power Plant as Electrical Designer during construction. He enjoyed his service with Carpenter's For Christ. He was very active in Civitan Club and was a member of Masonic Temple. Doug loved to share his talent and knowledge of woodwork, especially carving, at the Gillespie Center. He was an avid directed (husband) gardener and lawn care expert. Doug was a member of Prattmont Baptist Church where he attended with his wife Lilla.
Survivors are; a son and daughter in law, Don and Nancy Rice of Saint Clair, Michigan, a son, Larry Rice (Nina Needham) of Rockford, Tennessee; a daughter and son in law, Darlene and Randall Bice of Valdosta; grandchildren, Aughra Moon of Brooklyn, New York, Shari (James) Dodson of Eldersburg, Maryland, Joe Rice of Knoxville, Tennessee, Allen Bice of Valdosta, John (Alex) Bice of Annapolis, Maryland, Tim Bice of Nashville, Tennessee, Leslie Kirk of Knoxville, Tennessee, Sherri (Jason) Coggin of Knoxville, Tennessee; brothers Vernon Rice (Mary) and Allen Rice (Velma) both of Lakeland, Florida; a sister Ila Tuck (Gene) of Decatur, Alabama; and sister in law, Lillian Green Prater of Weogufka, Alabama; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mr. Rice was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lilla Mae Prater Rice, his brother, Lee Diamond and by his sisters, Juanita Rice, Willie Kelley and Virginia Rice Prater.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 2 p.m. EST in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend G. Robert Prater will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m EST until 2 p.m. EST. An informal meal gathering will occur immediately at Park Place following the interment.
