On Saturday, October 22, 2011, Dorothy Henderson Price of Statenville, GA, passed away at Heritage Hospice in Marietta, GA, at the age of 93.
Dorothy was born in Irwin County, GA, on September 24, 1918, and grew up in Tifton, GA, where she graduated from Tifton High School in 1936. She attended Tennessee State Teachers College (now Middle Tennessee State University) in Murfreesboro, TN, receiving a teaching certification. She also graduated with honors from Valdosta State College in Valdosta, GA.
Dorothy taught in Cook County, Berrien County, Lowndes County and Echols County during a 35 year career. At Valdosta Junior High School, she was chairman of the English Department and Teacher of the Year. Other teaching honors included Echols County Teacher of the Year, Star Teacher, and being twice listed for National Teacher of the Year. One of the assignments she sponsored for a Senior English class at Echols County High School has left a lasting mark in Statenville and Echols County. This class began compiling stories, pictures and interviews related to the history of Echols County, all of which was published in the book "Chinkypin", named after a type of oak tree native to Echols County. Work continued with later classes and even after Dorothy retired with "Chinkypin" expanding to 3 volumes followed by a single volume compilation. This love of history and genealogy led Dorothy to be one of the four founding members of the Echols County Historical Society. Dorothy was naturally an avid reader and served on the Echols County Library Board.
Dorothy was deeply involved with Statenville United Methodist Church where she was a member and taught the Young Adult and Senior Adult Sunday school classes for 33 years. She also served as Church Historian.
A very talented artist, Dorothy was known for her oil paintings of old buildings and homes of Echols County, many of which are on display at the Echols County Historical Society in Statenville. She was also known for her note cards on which she painted various floral or seasonal scenes.
One of Dorothy's first teaching assignments was in Alapaha, GA, where she met Leroy Price who would become her husband on January 8, 1944. She and Leroy were married for 62 years until his death in January 2006.
