Dorothy Carter Pearlman

Dorothy Carter Pearlman, age 94, of Valdosta, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012, in Knoxville, Tennessee at the home of her son, after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Oliver Carter and her husband, Sidney Pearlman. She is survived by a son, David Carter, daughter in law, Doris Carter, grandchildren, Sherrie Bowers, husband Jason and granddaughter Sarah Mynatt of Knoxville, Tennessee, Windy Wilson, husband, Todd and grandson Carter and granddaughter Reese from Charlotte, North Carolina., David Carter, Jr., wife Catherine and three grandsons, Joseph, Christian, and Evan of Knoxville, Tennessee; step son, Jonathan Pearlman wife Aileen and grandson, Jaron of Asheville, North Carolina, step daughter, Vicki Schlesinger husband Steve and granddaughters Emily and Nichole of St. Louis, Missouri, step daughter, Cathy Chatman husband Bill and grandsons Aaron and Adam of St. Louis, Missouri. She also leaves behind her close friends, Gwen Vance, James Goolsby, Mary Jane Yorke and her most trusted, faithful companion "Rexxy". Amedisys Hospice Services provided constant attention to Dorothy's wellbeing through Ashley, Brenda, Anita and Bonnie and special appreciation goes to caregivers Margaret Harper and Sheila Jalalababi who were so loving and dedicated to Dorothy every day.
Dorothy was born in Broadwell, Illinois to Jack and Corinne Hanahan on September 7, 1917. She lived in Valdosta for many years and moved to Knoxville to be close to her children and grandchildren.
Dorothy Carter Pearlman expanded the appreciation and awareness of the arts by being actively involved in artistic programs in Valdosta for over 40 years. She was first an educator and director of plays, musicals and pageants for the city of Valdosta. After retiring from secondary education in 1978 Dorothy established the Lowndes Valdosta Arts Commission. In 1989, she was the key player establishing the 1st Cultural Arts Center for Valdosta. Some of Dorothy's civic affiliations included American Association of University Women, Wymodausis Woman's Club, Valdosta Garden Club, and Town and Country Garden Club. She was the director of many pageants including the Miss Georgia Pageant and received many honors including Valdosta State College Woman of the Year, Outstanding Secondary Educators of America, and Who's Who in Georgia.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 13, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rabbi Moshe Elbaz will officiate.
