Doris Scruggs, 83, of Valdosta, died on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Lakehaven Nursing Home. Born in Berrien County, Georgia, on September 1, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Chester Griner and Myrtle Ray Griner. Mrs. Scruggs met her husband to be while she was attending 7th grade in Naylor. They began dating while she was in high school in Thomasville and became engaged the day that they graduated. Mr. and Mrs. Scruggs were married October 14, 1945. Mrs. Scruggs worked in retail clothing for many years. She began her career as manager at Mangels in downtown Valdosta, and later as a buyer for Varnedoes. Later in her life she worked as a volunteer for many organizations including the Pink Ladies. She loved to travel with her husband and friends. She was a Charter Member of Azalea City Baptist Church and a devoted member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors are her husband of 65 years, Stuart Scruggs of Valdosta; her daughter and son in law, Nancy and John Romine of Quitman; grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the joy of her life and they include, grandchildren, Josh and Christie Romine of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Spence and Jessie Romine of Valdosta, great grandchildren, Ellie Romine, Anna Claire Romine and Sara Jordan Romine of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and a great granddaughter expected in May; her brother and sister in law, James and Vivian Griner of Elizabethton, Tennessee. Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by one brother.
Graveside services and interment will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at 3 p.m. at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Dr. Phil West will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Food Ministry at First Baptist Church.
