Doris Downing Cheek, 81 of Lake Park, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at Brooks County Hospital. Born on April 2, 1924 in Hahira, she was the daughter of the late Burton and Bertha Barker Downing. She was a sales person at Darby’s Shoes for over 25 years and was a member of Westside Baptist Church. She greatly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and gardening in her yard. She was an avid bowler and Braves baseball fan.
Survivors are a daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Pete Berard of Dasher; grandson and his wife, Richard (Tiger) and Laura Berard of Valdosta; granddaughter and her husband, Teresa and Fred Wetherington of Hahira; great grandchildren; Brogen Berard, Bobby, Lexie and Peter Wetherington; sister and brother-in-law, Caroline and Phil Gale of Port Charlotte, FL; nephews, Ricky Sutler, Frank Sutler, Michael Downing, Bob Downing, Terrell Downing; nieces, Lisa Foster, Sheila Cotte, Laura Lynn, Kay Morris; great niece, Brandy Lightsey; great nephew, Wesley Sutler; several other nieces and nephews and her dog, Spot. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Downing, J. L. Downing, Johnny Downing, and a nephew, Greg Sutler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2006 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Ernie Jones officiating. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
