Donald T. Schutt passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness. Don was born on October 3, 1931, to the late Maurice and Leona Scruggs Schutt in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee and graduated from the School of Banking at Louisiana State University. He worked for Commerce Union Bank in Nashville before moving to Valdosta in 1962 to accept a position with the First National Bank of Valdosta.
Don became president of First National Bank in 1965 and held that position until he retired in 1989. After a brief retirement, he became president of Valdosta Bank and Trust in 1993 and served until 1998.
Don loved Valdosta and strongly believed in giving back to the community that was so good to him. He held numerous volunteer positions over the years. He twice served as chairman of the United Way of Lowndes County. He served eighteen years on the board of the Valdosta Housing Authority and was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1970. He served as chairman of the Valdosta State University Foundation on three occasions. He was the first chairman of Arts Incorporated in Valdosta and served on the board of directors of the Boys Club and the South Georgia Regional Library. He also served two terms as president of the Valdosta Country Club.
He took great pleasure in two pastimes, golf and traveling. He regarded both as a challenge. He was an avid golfer and loved socializing with the extended group of friends he met through golf. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, and he treasured his friends.
Don is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Ann McCormick Schutt; daughter and son-in-law, Kim Schutt and Tommy McNeal; daughter Danya Schutt; son-in-law David J. Green; grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Ray, Emily Anna McNeal, Elizabeth Alden Green, and Alexander Jackson Green; and the mother of his children, Kathleen Schutt, all of Valdosta.
