Donald Earl Pitts, 92, of Valdosta, died at his home on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, after a brief period of declining health. Born in Marietta, Ohio on August 30, 1918, he was the son of the late Clyde and Nellie Bowers Pitts. Following the death of his mother, he moved to the Washington County Children's Home in Marietta. He also spent time at his grandparent's home as he grew up. Mr. Pitts attended business school in Marietta, Ohio before joining the Army during World War II. After the war he worked for Southern Railway in Macon before being transferred to Valdosta in 1953. Mr. Pitts retired from Southern Railway in 1979 after more than 30 years with Norfolk Southern as a Sales Representative. A member of First United Methodist Church, he faithfully served as an usher, choir member and Sunday School Teacher. He was a very frugal man who selflessly loved and cared for his family.
Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Virginia Saunders Pitts of Valdosta; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Steve Bishop of Valdosta, Donna and Dana Bradford of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Ginger (Chris) Dempsey of Christiansburg, Virginia, Andy (Bonnie) Bishop of Valdosta, Shannon Bradford of Jacksonville, Florida; great grandchildren, Sarah Bishop and Jack Bishop of Valdosta, Molly Dempsey and Gretchen Dempsey of Christiansburg, Virginia; step grandson and wife, Jeff and Andi Bradford, step greatgrandchildren, Riley, Zoe and Ellie Bradford all of Cary, North Carolina; special caregiver, Pam Gary. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Pitts and a sister, Juanita Razor.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Reverend Bob Moon will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Friday from 5 -7 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to First United Methodist Church.
