Donald Dan Cowart, 80, of Hahira, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. Mr. Cowart was born on February 9, 1932 in Lowndes County to the late Dan Sikes Cowart and Laura Hughes Cowart. He was a 1949 graduate of Hahira High School. Mr. Cowart was retired from Bell South Telephone Company after 36 years of service. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 until 1955. He was a member of Hahira First Baptist Church and served many years as a deacon and various other offices at the church. Mr. Cowart was a delegate for many years with the Valdosta Baptist Association. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Cowart was truly dedicated to his ministry at Martin McLane Funeral Home. His life was a living testimony and was a true man of faith.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hughes Cowart of Hahira, two daughters and sons in law, Gwen and Ken Rowland of Cordova, TN, Beth and Jason Wisenbaker of Valdosta, one son and daughter in law, Stan and Joy Cowart of Hahira, five grandchildren, Maggie Wisenbaker of Valdosta, Ben Cowart of Hahira, Gabby Rowland, Shawn Rowland and Joy Rowland all of Cordova, TN, three sisters and one brother in law, Pearl Schaefer of Port Charlotte, FL, Lillian Goodyear of Valdosta and Lorean and Candler Register of Homerville, one brother and sister in law, Herbert and Shirley Cowart of St. Charles, MO, many nieces and nephews. Mr. Cowart is preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Pat Register, Ruth Spell, Myrtle Hughes and Mary Lee Womack.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11, 2012 at eleven a. m. at the Hahira First Baptist Church with Reverend Haskell White and Pastor David Gordon officiating. He will be placed in the church at ten a. m. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from five until eight p. m. at the Martin McLane Funeral Home in Hahira. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the missions fund at Hahira First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 555, Hahira, GA 31632 or to Gideons International, P. O. Box 4131, Valdosta, GA 31604.
