David Lewis Singletary, Sr., 76, of Valdosta, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2024, following a lengthy illness.
Lewis was born on September 12, 1948 in Gainesville, FL, the second son of the late Joseph Sherwood and Louise Laing Singletary. He spent most of his childhood in Dougherty County, graduating from Albany High School in 1966. After studying for two years at Albany Junior College, he served for several years in the Army National Guard.
In July 1976, Lewis married the love of his life, the former Jane Butler of Waycross. Together, they settled in Valdosta and raised their family. He would be the first to tell you how much he adored her and making her happy was his number one priority in life.
Although Lewis worked in several different industries over the years, he spent most of his career with Behavioral Health Services of South Georgia. Before retiring, he worked in social services first for the developmental disability community and then later serving at-risk adolescents and youth.
Lewis enjoyed “tinkering” around in his workshop while enjoying a good cup of coffee. He took pride in being able to fix just about anything, from cars to plumbing to computers, often juggling multiple projects simultaneously. If you ever needed a specific tool, Lewis probably had at least two on hand. His many other talents also included an effortless ability to make others laugh and making the best from-scratch pancakes in the world.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jane Butler Singletary, as well as five children: David Singletary, Jr. of Savannah, Nancy Cole (John) of Valdosta, Ellen Singletary (Jake Bankston) of Athens, Karen Singletary of Adel, and Philip Singletary (Kayla) of Valdosta. He was a sweet and fun “Big Daddy” to five grandchildren: David Singletary, Samantha and Gabrielle Cole, all of Valdosta, and Gavin Bean and Sophia Green of Live Oak, FL. He is also survived by a brother, Steve Singletary (Jan), a sister, Patty Berger (Gordon), and many other extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Singletary.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 22, 2024, from 5-7pm at Carson McLane. A private family graveside service and interment will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 3pm at Oakland Cemetery in Waycross, GA.
