David Edward O’Steen, Jr. 56, of Valdosta passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Waycross, on November 3, 1967, David was the son of Marilyn Jefffords O’Steen and the late David E. O’Steen Sr. He selflessly gave 35 years of his life to law enforcement, including 20 years with the Georgia Department of Corrections, and 15 years as a Deputy with the Lowndes County Sheriffs’ Department.
A graduate of Lowndes High School, David played football with the Lowndes County Vikings and continued to be an avid Viking fan as well as following college football. Known as “Big O,” he was a humble and gentle man. Family was priority to David. He had a special place in his heart for his grandson Colton, who adorably called him “Papa.”
David is survived by his loving wife, Amanda O’Steen of Valdosta, a devoted daughter, Tara Goen (Erich) of Valdosta, grandson, Colton Goen and a granddaughter, Aubrey, expected in October; his mother, Marilyn O’Steen of Valdosta; sister, Joy Herring (Danny) of Lake Park, and a nephew and niece, Ben Herring and Alexis Herring also of Lake Park. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Abundant Life Church of God. Pastor Wayne Hughes and Pastor Brian Gay will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. Honors at graveside will be provided by the Lowndes County Sheriffs’ Department and the Georgia State Patrol. The family will receive friends at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The O’Steen family wishes to express their gratitude to Lynn Raines and all the staff of Heart of Hospice for the care given to David.
