Daphne Lucille Stephenson (maiden name Tresher), devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and committed Christian, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, after a one-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 67.
Born on May 25, 1954 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Daphne was the daughter of the late George Fildes Tresher, Jr. and Daphne Lucille Clemons. When she was in elementary school, her family relocated to Saint Simons Island, Georgia. Daphne always considered Saint Simons Island her childhood home and never hesitated to tell folks that she was an “island girl” at heart.
Daphne attended nursing school at Brunswick Junior College, and after graduation, she went to work as a registered nurse at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, Georgia. While working in Valdosta, Daphne met the love of her life, James “Jimmy” Lester Stephenson, Jr., marrying him in 1976. In 1996, they moved to Hahira, Georgia, where Daphne would live the rest of her life. Daphne loved visiting the beach, spending time with her family, reading books, watching movies, and worshipping with her prayer group. She attended Hahira United Methodist Church. She also loved spending time with her faithful canine companion, Abby, who stayed by her side and comforted her when she was ill.
Daphne is survived by her husband, Jimmy Stephenson; her two children, Hollie (Rebecca) Stephenson of Portland, Oregon, and Blake (Andrés) Stephenson of Chicago, Illinois; her sisters Kelly (& the late Jeff) Gunderson and Leigh (Tony) Rhodes of Saint Simons Island; her three sisters-in-law that she considered biological sisters, Becky Plaxico (Terry Clontz) of Naples, Florida, Lynn Revill of Hahira, and Jean Murray of Hahira; and one grandson, Graydon Rojas Stephenson of Chicago, Illinois. Daphne was preceded in death by her parents, George Fildes Tresher, Jr. and Daphne Lucille Clemons, and her two brothers, John “Johnny” Wade Tresher and William “Billy” Tresher.
