Daniel E. (Dan) Mead

Daniel E. (Dan) Mead, 87, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 suddenly, after a period of declining health. Born in Ocala, to the late Walter Stevens Mead and Coral Esther Hull Mead, he grew up and attended school in Darby and Daytona Beach, Florida. Dan served in the National Guard (Coast Artillery) for a couple of years prior to World War II, and then joined the U.S. Army about a week after the war began. At the end of WWII he left the Army and then reenlisted in the Air Force 2 ½ years later. He served in the Air Force until his retirement after 22 years of service. During his military career, Dan served in South Pacific during WWII and in Korea during the Korean conflict, Turkey and other duty stations. While stationed in Tennessee, Dan met and then married his sweet wife, the former Lila Catherine (known as Skip) Klock on November 26, 1953. Following his retirement, he and Skip returned to Valdosta where Dan worked for Sears for over 13 years. They lived in Suwannee, FL where Dan received Jesus Christ as his savior and became involved with The Mailbox Club ministry. They soon moved back to Valdosta to the same home they had lived in earlier and joined Greenwood Baptist Church. There he faithfully served his Lord for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lila (Skip) Mead, of Valdosta; three sons and two daughters in law, William P. & Pat Mead, of Hamilton, GA, Danny J. Mead, of Carrolton, GA and James & Shirley Mead of Tifton; three daughters and two sons in law, Mary C. Reynolds, of Ocala, FL, Bobbi & Ed Fletcher of Melrose, FL and Joy & Steve Jennings of Valdosta. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and several brothers in law, a nephew and many other relatives and special friends. Dan is preceded in death by two brothers, Norris Elmer Mead and Henry Walter Mead, and a sister Mary Louise Mead Snyder and a daughter in law, Carol Mead.

Funeral services for Dan will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 29, 2009 at Greenwood Baptist Church. Rev. Michael Bass and Rev. Brian Whitson will officiate. Burial will follow at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends this evening, Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 6until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
