Dana Fusaro Black, 47, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Columbia South Carolina on October 29, 1969, she grew up in the Columbia area and graduated from Irmo High School in 1987. While in high school, she was an excellent athlete, participating in basketball, softball and tennis. Dana was also a scholar, participating in Beta Club. After high school she graduated from the University of South Carolina, majoring in English. After college, Dana went to work at Davis-Garvin Insurance Company in Columbia and she worked there for 23 years. In 1998, Dana met Larry Black in Perry, GA and they dated until they were married in Columbia on June 11, 2000. They soon moved to Augusta, where Larry was attending Dental School. After his graduation, they moved to Valdosta, where Larry had grown up and he was beginning his dental practice. Dana helped Larry in this practice by being his office manager, both in Valdosta and in Quitman. She continued her love for tennis, both playing and by coaching her daughter's teams and matches. Dana was a caretaker for her family and many friends. She intuitively knew how to care for and direct those close to her, helping bring comfort and direction. Dana also enjoyed fishing, being at the beach, collecting shells and reading a good book.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Black, of Valdosta; her two children, Rachel Black and Nicholas Black, both of Valdosta; her mother, Kaye Fusaro of Columbia, SC; her father, Tony Fusaro, of Columbia, SC; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Larry & Faye Black of Clyattville; and her sister and brother-in-law, Tammy & Jeff Smith of Atlanta. Also surviving is her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Becky & Ron Lundy of Salisbury, NC and her grandmother, Connie Fusaro of Huntington, NY; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews.
The funeral for Dana will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Pastor Tommy Bussey will officiate. Burial will follow at Benevolence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA, at www.aspca.org, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, at www.stjude.org.
