Courtland Winn (Cody) Smith

March 24, 1927 — March 5, 2009

COURTLAND WINN (CODY) SMITH, 81, of Valdosta, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Heritage House Nursing Home. He was born in Atlanta on March 24, 1927, to the late James Robert and Frances Winn Smith.

He attended Darlington School in Rome and Boys High in Atlanta. During World War II he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre. After his service, he attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He was a partner in Valdosta Insurance Services for almost 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eloise M. Smith; a daughter, Frances Guice and husband Merrill of Valdosta; three sons, Courtland Winn Smith, Jr. and wife Cindy of Warner Robins, Josh Smith and wife Cyndie of Chattanooga, TN, and Stuart Smith and wife Gwen of Douglas; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Segrest and husband Michael of Branford, FL; and one sister-in-law, Carolyn B. Smith of Tampa, FL. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother, James Robert Smith, Jr.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Peter Ingeman officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends in the Parish Hall immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or a charity of your choice.
