Corinne (Sis) Smith Mcgehee

d. April 25, 2009

Corinne ("Sis") Smith McGehee, wife of the Rev. Robert G. McGehee, died somewhat unexpectedly at home in Decatur, AL and ascended to her heavenly home before dawn on Friday, April 25, Services in Valdosta are Tuesday, April 28, 2009 with viewing at Carson McLane Funeral Home, 9:00 a.m. to 9:40 a.m.; burial at Sunset Hills Cemetery, especially for family, but all are welcome, 10 a.m.; visitation at First Presbyterian Church's Fellowship Hall at 11 a.m.; and celebration and thanksgiving of her life and faith at First Presbyterian's Fellowship Hall at noon.
Corinne, graduate of a predecessor school to Valdosta State University and certified at Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School, NYC, worked for several years in Atlanta as secretary to two Presbyterian pastors who became moderator of the Presbyterian (U.S.) General Assembly. Most of her life was as a homemaker and being a friend according to what she considered her very modest gifts. She supported her husband's ministries from Dallas to Nashville to Birmingham and in between.
As a teen-ager she gave her loyalty to Jesus Christ in ways that brought forgiveness to her and honor to her Lord Jesus. As a middle-ager she was blessed with the New Testament's promise of Christ's baptism in Holy Spirit with the assuring evidence of the gift of tongues for her prayer life. She longed for others to receive such gifts of prayer, power and communion with God.
She was dedicated to her churches' lives and served over the years in ministries like leading and story-telling to pre-schoolers, of playing the piano for Sunday school assemblies, of singing in choirs and choruses, of leading a church library team, and of visiting other members with a friend.
Special interests were in being a friend long-time and short-time and wanting others to live by faith in Jesus Christ as God's gift for their forgiveness and life. Her laughter and caring made others feel better about themselves. Grandchildren brought her special joy in love and laughter shared both ways.
Survivors are her beloved husband of 57 years and siblings Julia Bess (Mrs. Tom) Scott, Tom H. Smith, Jr., M.D. and Henry Briggs Smith, M.D. all of Valdosta, children Georgia M. (and Ted) Atkins, Mary M. Wallis of Chattanooga, and R. Marshall (and Jeanette) McGehee II of Atlanta, grandchildren Talmadge H. Atkins and Eleanor Winn Atkins Chasie, Corinne Briggs, MacGregor and Bess Wallis, and several nieces and nephews. One sibling, Georgia Winn Smith Thomson. preceded her in death by three weeks.
