Coney Lee Carter, 83, of Brooks County, passed away Monday, August 4, 2008 at the Langdale Hospice House following an extended illness. Born on July 14, 1925 in Lowndes County, he was the son of the late Hiram and Pearl Carter. He was a lifelong resident of Brooks Co. Mr. Carter was retired from Strickland Cotton Mills. He began Bass Hunter Boat Co. in 1978. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was a member of Welcome Hill Church of Christ.
He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bobby Lee and Jeanette Carter, Ray Vernon and Barbara Carter, Melvin Claude Carter, all of Brooks Co., James Raymond and Lisa Carter of Moultrie; 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Carter is also survived by a loving niece, Linda Gibson, one sister-in-law, Greta Carter of Gainesville, GA; daughter-in-law, Freida M. Carter; two brothers, Pafford Carter of Statenville and Dick Carter of FL; five sisters, Leona Upchurch of Clyattville, Flora Warren of VA., Shirly Walters and Pearly Walters of LA, Susie Hooper of AZ. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Marene Hutchinson Carter, one son, Jerome W. Carter, three brothers, Charlie Carter, Albert Carter and Mark Carter and one sister, Dora Carter Youmans.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 7, 2008 at the Welcome Hill Church of Christ with Mr. Jerry Herring and Mr. Jim Lee officiating. Mr. Carter will lie in state from10 a.m. until service time in the church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of South Georgia at P.O.
