Clyde Bennett Guest, Jr.

September 18, 1935 — April 1, 2014

Clyde Bennett Guest, Jr., 78, of Lake Park, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at South Georgia Medical Center.

He was born September 18, 1935 in Abbeville, a son of the late Clyde Bennett Guest, Sr. and Zadie Lillian McKie Guest. As a child, his family moved to the Bemiss area, he graduated from Pine Grove High School with the Class of 1952, and honorably served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne. Mr. Guest was one of the first Motorcycle Policemen with the Valdosta Police Department, and was instrumental in starting the Motorcycle Division in the Waycross Police Department. He later became a Ware County Sheriffs Deputy, working his way up to the position of Detective. After leaving the Sheriffs Department, he began his career with Seaboard Coastline Railroad, retiring in 1983 as Chief Clerk. Following his retirement he worked at several local businesses in Valdosta, Mr. Guest was a dedicated employee wherever he worked. He was a member of Lake Park United Methodist Church.

He was a man of many talents, hobbies, and could truly do anything that he set his mind to. Dependable, loyal, honest, brave, caring and humble, those are just a few characteristics he displayed during his lifetime. Our Daddy was the gentlest of men. He loved with a fierce love, a solid love, and an unconditional love. He loved and he will always be loved and missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Hester Peavey Guest of Lake Park; four children and their spouses, Deborah Guest Metts and Scott of Valdosta, Clyde Bennett (Benny) Guest III and Barbara of Valdosta, Christopher B. Guest and Lisa of Valdosta, and Heather Guest Dawkins and Spencer of Lake Park; six grandchildren, Emily Metts Wade and husband Lee of Valdosta, Eli Scott Metts of Valdosta, Logan Brooke Dawkins and Alden Rachel Dawkins of Lake Park, and Christian Blake Guest and Cason Bennett Guest of Valdosta; two great-grandchildren, Ellie Scott Wade and Connor Tison Wade of Valdosta; one sister, Carolyn Hall of Clyattville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Lillian DeLoach.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Guest will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the Chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Mr. Wayne Dawkins and Pastor Isaac Salgado officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
