Clarence Mathews Paine, Sr.

February 16, 1925 — January 29, 2013

Clarence Mathews Paine, Sr., a veteran of World War II who served in Europe, died on Tuesday, January 29, at Fellowship Home. Clarence was 87.
Born in Valdosta, GA on February 16, 1925, son of Mitchell Jones and Emma Lou Paine, Clarence served in World War II with the 627th Engineer Light Equipment Company, 1st Army, European theater. At the war's conclusion, he attended the University of Georgia and then returned home to Valdosta to work in the family insurance business.
Under his leadership, Paine Insurance Agency grew into a full service independent insurance agency doing business in Valdosta for over 50 years. Clarence engaged in numerous civic activities including the Valdosta Lions Club and the Valdosta Downtown Development Authority.
His long service to the Valdosta Lions Club was honored with the dedication of a family pavilion in McKey Park named for him in recognition of his numerous years of service.
Clarence was also a founding member of the Valdosta Stamp Club, as well as an avid hunter and fisherman at Loch Laurel and the Sunset Lake Hunting and Fishing Club.
He was a lifelong member of the Central Avenue Church of Christ.
Clarence is survived by his wife, Joyce Paine and four children: C. Mathews Paine, Jr. (Nancy) of Moultrie, GA; Anne Paine West (Fowler) of Alexandria, VA; Joy Paine Snyder (Bill) of Columbia, SC; and Stephen Paine of New York, NY. He also is survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 4 p. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from three until four p. m. at the funeral home.
Clarence is yet another member of the Greatest Generation that served his country so honorably. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Benevolence Fund of the Central Avenue Church of Christ, 304 East Central Avenue, Valdosta, GA 31601 or to the Wounded Warriors Project, 3343 Peachtree Road, NE #M20, Atlanta, GA 30326.
