Clara Puckett Winston

Clara Puckett Winston, 88, of St. Joseph, MO, formerly of Valdosta, died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006 at the Fountains at Corby Place. Clara was born on October 4, 1918 in Tifton. She earned an AB from Wesleyan College, a Bachelor’s of Music from Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon, and did postgraduate work at Julliard School of Music in New York City. On June 15, 1940, she married Richard Kinnebrew Winston. The Winston family of three daughters and two sons moved to Valdosta in 1953, where Clara shared her musical gifts by accompanying the choir at the First United Methodist Church and actively volunteered with the Lowndes-Valdosta Arts Council (LVAC). After the death of her husband, Dr. Winston, in September, 1998, Clara moved to St. Joseph, MO, home of her daughter and son in law, Peggy and Wally McDonald.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ralph Atticus Puckett and Clara Stedman Puckett; her husband, Richard Kinnebrew Winston; a brother, Thomas Stedman Puckett and a son, John Paul Winston.
Survivors include her daughters, Lane Winston Smith, Valdosta. Peggy Winston McDonald, St Joseph, Elizabeth(Libba) Winston, Tampa, FL; son, Richard Kinnebrew Winston, Jr., Leesburg; brother, Col. Ralph Puckett of Columbus,; grandsons, H. Briggs Smith, Jr., Richard Winston Smith, Louis Jamison McDonald; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lane McDonald and Clara Elizabeth Winston; great-grandsons, Mason William and Logan Richard McDonald, Richard Winston Smith, Jr., Henry Gray Smith; great-granddaughters, Lane Mason Smith, Madeleine Ellis Smith and Leah Katheryn McDonald.
A memorial service was held at The Fountains at Corby Place on December 29, 2006. A private family internment will be held at Sunset Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007 at The First United Methodist Church. Reverend Thomas Mason, Jr. and Dr. A. Jason Shirah will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
