Clara E. McVey, 90, went home to be with the Lord on June 22, 2012. She was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on September 17, 1921, the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson Chason and Mary Lillian McLeod Chason. As a young child she moved to Tallahassee, Florida where she remained until 1946 when she went to Juneau, Alaska to work for the U.S. Government. While in Alaska she met Lauder T. McVey and they married in 1946. They moved to Florida in 1947 where Lauder attended the University of Florida. Following graduation they moved to Valdosta, Georgia. Clara worked as a homemaker and was actively involved in politics. She served as a campaign director and political consultant in many elections. She then made a life decision to leave politics and devote her life entirely to her family and her church. Clara was a faithful member of Lee Street Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, WMU President, and held weekly prayer meetings in her home. She raised two sons who became Baptist pastors. Since January 2006 she lived in Brunswick, Georgia and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Survivors are her sons and daughters-in-law, Lauder T., Jr. and Lucy McVey of Round Rock, TX, Scott D. and Jackie McVey of Brunswick; grandchildren, Tully and Mindy McVey, Chason McVey of Round Rock, TX, Abbie and Adam Bruss of Austin, TX, Hannah and Levi Moore of Savannah; great grandchildren, Lauder McVey , Hudson McVey of Round Rock, TX, Ellie Bruss of Austin, TX; sister, Edith Elzie of Crawfordville, FL, brother and sister-in-law, Thad and Dottie Chason of Tallahasssee; Emily Turvaville and several other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mrs. McVey was preceded in death by her husband, Lauder T. McVey, a brother, Edwin Chason, sister, Frances Garrett and a great grandchild, Alberto Bruss.
Funeral services for Mrs. McVey will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Scott McVey and Reverend Lauder Tully McVey, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in Tallahassee, FL. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until service time.
