CHESTER SMITH, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009, in Jacksonville, FL at the age of 86, after an extended illness. He was born on September 20, 1922 in Dupont, Georgia, to the late Willie B. and Joe Sire Smith. Chester was a World War II Veteran, serving his country with the U. S. Army in the European theatre. He lived most of his life in Valdosta with his wife, the late Cora Lee Mathis Smith. His remaining years were spent in Jennings, FL. He was a retired John Deere mechanic, farmer, inventive cook and avid fisherman.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine Smith Middleton and husband Paul of Jacksonville, FL; his son, Thomas Chester Smith and wife Margaret of Dasher; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren of Jacksonville, FL, as well as two grandsons and one great grand daughter of Valdosta. He is also survived by a brother, Fred Earl Smith of Valdosta, and one sister, Almalewis Brown of Albany. Chester also had five brothers and one sister who predeceased him.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, January 17, 2009 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Rev. Robert L. Willis officiating. Burial will follow at Good Hope Cemetery.
