Charles N. Howell, Sr., 77, of Valdosta, died Monday, May 1, 2006 at South Georgia Medical Center after an extended illness. Born on June 17, 1928 in Valdosta, he was the son of the late George L. and LaRue Mims Howell. Mr. Howell served 23 years in the U.S. Navy retiring as Sr. Chief Petty Officer. His Navy career spanned World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. He worked on the first government computers in the late 1940’s. He attended Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina as well as Valdosta State College. Upon retirement from the Navy, he volunteered more than 11, 000 hours at Moody Air Force Base Hospital where he was Director of Volunteers. He taught computer Technology at Valdosta Tech and was employed with First State Bank and Trust Co. for many years. While volunteering at Moody AFB Hospital, he developed a computer application which was implemented throughout Air Force hospitals worldwide. He received numerous military and civilian awards and was a friend to all. He was a Chief’s Chief.
Survivors include his wife, Anna L. Howell of Valdosta; daughter and son in law, Jan and Frank Mader of Bentonville, AR; son and daughter in law, Dr. Charles N. Jr. and Becky Howell, of Ponte Vedra, FL; five grandchildren, Chris Mader of Ft Collins, CO, Jason Mader of Eureka, MO, Matthew and Amber Mader of Lexington Park, MD., Holly Howell, Jesse Howell of Ponte Verda, FL; two great grandchildren, Adam Howell Mader of Eureka, MO, Meagan Mader of Lexington Park, MD.; one sister and brother in law, Barbara and Dewey Bills of Nampa, ID; three nephews, Michael, David, and Gary Bills.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2006 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with full military honors. Burial will follow in the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society, Post Office Box 5323, Valdosta, GA 31603.
