Charles Lee (Charlie) Daniel

The Rev. Dr. Charles Lee (Charlie) Daniel, 77, of Valdosta died on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at the South Georgia Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Charlie was born on June 6, 1935 in Coffee County, Georgia to the late Horace and Willie Lee Shepherd Daniel. He graduated from Douglas High School, South Georgia College, Emory University with a degree in Philosophy, attended Candler School of Theology, earned a M.ED. in English Education from Georgia Southern College and a Ph.D. in English from Florida State University. Charlie was Ordained as a minister in The United Methodist Church in 1959. He pastored churches in Screven, Lake Park, Funston, Wright's Chapel and Naylor. He taught high school English for seven years before moving to Valdosta State College in 1966 where he taught English until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1997. Following his retirement, Charlie moved to his farm where he grew blueberries as a member of the Sunbelt Section of Michigan Blueberry Association.

Charlie was a member of The South Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church. He and his family attended Valdosta First United Methodist Church where he was a teacher of the Becky Anthony Sunday School Class for 46 years. He also sang in the church choir, bowled on the church bowling team and was a member of the Friday Morning Prayer Group for 40 years. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, president of the American Association of College Professors and a member of several professional organizations. Charlie is remembered as a dedicated husband and father, a gifted storyteller, an expert in American poetry, especially the works of Robert Frost, an expert in Early American Literature, a loyal friend and a "jack-of-all-trades."

Survivors included his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Brockway Daniel of Valdosta; a son, Warren Scott Daniel (Leisa Parker); two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill Daniel Sanders (Joe), Tammye Daniel Cato (Mike); six grandchildren, Victoria Sanders Ladd (Jeremy), Brooke Sanders Sensanbaugher (Scott), Lee Cato, Lauren Cato, Meredith Sanders, Anna Sanders; two great-granddaughters, Dawson and Parker Ladd; two sisters-in-law, Ann Duffy (Hank), Maggie McDavid Rockett; a brother-in-law, Sam Brockway; numerous nieces and nephews and an extended family of cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lynn Bettis, and a nephew, Jerry Bettis.

Services for The Rev. Dr. Charles Daniel will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the First Methodist Church with Dr. Bob Moon, Rev. Tommy Mason, and Dr. Trent Busch officiating. The burial will follow in the Willacoochee Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
