Charles Jackson Norris, 89, of Valdosta, Georgia, died on December 9, 2016, at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick, Georgia, following a short illness.
He was born on August 9, 1927, in Jesup, Georgia, the son of Janie and John Eber Norris. He graduated from Auburn University where he received his degree in architecture. He married Barbara Bowman and moved to Valdosta where he began his practice of architecture. He designed many churches, schools and homes throughout Southeast Georgia. Charles served honorably in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a charter member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class and served on both the administrative board and Board of Trustees. He served as President of the Lions Club of Valdosta where he was a 50 year member. Charles also served as a City Councilman for the City of Valdosta and was a charter member of the June Norwood coffee club. He enjoyed golf and playing bridge.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Bowman Norris. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Ann Crowe, and brothers, Royal Norris, Robert Norris, and Emory Norris. Survivors include his children, Annette (Derry) Crosby of Valdosta and Patti (Ted) DuBose of Brunswick, four grandchildren, Courtney (Ryan) McCrary, Justin (Kelly) Crosby, Casey (John) Wasinger, and Cara (Jack) Bell, three great grandchildren, Jack and Caroline Crosby and Cooper Bell, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 12:30 at Carson McLane Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Rev. V. L. Daughtery will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens.
