Charles Alton Harnage, Sr.

September 3, 1918 — December 27, 2008

Charles Alton Harnage, Sr., 1918 – 2008, age 90. Charles passed away on December 27, 2008 after a brief illness. He was born in Allenhurst, GA but lived most of his life in Florida. In his younger years he was in the Army and the Civilian Conservation Corps where he worked on a number of large construction projects including the Panama Canal.
In the years prior to his retirement, he ran a small wholesale business on the east coast of Florida. In 1988 he and his wife Dorothy moved to Cherry Lake, FL. and lived there the rest of their lives. They were both members of the Cherry Lake Baptist Church. Charles enjoyed life and was very outgoing and he rarely met a stranger. He had a great sense of humor and kept that right up to his last days, no doubt one of the secrets for his long life.
Charles was a descendant of early pioneer families in the South Georgia and North Florida area. His paternal great grandparents were Jacob Bentley Harnage and Mary Jane Mullis-Harnage from Lowndes and Clinch counties, Georgia. His maternal grandparents were John Joseph Parker and Eliza Catherine Deal-Parker, from Salem, FL (Taylor County)
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, James Andy Harnage and Lydia Viola Parker-Harnage; two brothers, John Harnage and Robert Harnage; two sisters, Catherine Croft and Doris Carol Roberts and his wife Dorothy McLean-Harnage. He leaves behind a son and daughter in law, Charles A. & Margaret Sims Harnage; a daughter, Rebecca Ann Harnage; a grandson Martin A. Harnage and three great grandchildren, Shelby, Sabrina and Caiden. He is also survived by a brother, Harvey E. Harnage and a sister, Helen I. Blount, and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at Cherry Lake Baptist Church on Friday, January 2, 2009 at 11 a.m. Pastor Manny Hicks will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Cherry Lake Baptist Church (c/o M.J. Hicks, 475 Whispering Pines Loop, Madison FL 32340) which he and his wife attended for many years. Condolences may be conveyed to the family on the obituary page of www.McLaneFuneralServices.com Carson McLane Funeral Home.
