Charlene Bennett Powell, wife of Regular Army (Ret) Lt. Colonel E. W. “Bert” Powell for over 64 years died on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on May 30, 1925 in Keytesville, Missouri, the daughter of the late Charles and Addie B. Bennett. Her three sisters preceded her death in Missouri. Charlene was a strong supporter of her country during World War II as she served in support of her nations production of military supplies in Kansas City during the war. She and Bert met soon after his return from Europe in 1946 and were married in September that year. She became a strong supporter with him as he served almost twenty eight years in military service. Mrs. Powell was always active wherever they lived, whether it was in America or overseas in Japan, Alaska or Europe. She trained young golfers at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama and was a golfer in Germany where she was president of the organization at Hinesburg. Mrs. Powell became an excellent artistic oil painter, spent many hours as a volunteer in various artistic locations. Her last area as a volunteer was with the Turner Center for the Arts in Valdosta.
Mrs. Powell was a member of many churches during her lifetime, was a leader of young members of those churches and transferred to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) after her marriage. She became a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) when they moved to Valdosta ten years ago and became a deacon shortly after joining that church.
Survivors include her husband, Bert and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 11am, Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the First Christian Church in Valdosta with Rev. Chris Michael and Rev. John McGowan officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the reception hall at the church. Memorials may be made to the South Georgia Medical Center Foundation, P. O.
