Catherine Cooper Adams, 81, of Valdosta died Saturday, January 29, 2011 at South Georgia Medical Center. She was born on January 3, 1930 in Brooks County to the late James Ellis and Mabel West Cooper. Mrs. Adams was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for more than twenty years. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Morven High School, attended ABAC, graduated from Georgia Southern University and graduated with her Masters in Education from Valdosta State University. Mrs. Adams retired from teaching at Lowndes High School and then taught English at Valdosta State University. She served as training and education coordinator at South Georgia Medical Center. Mrs. Adams served with her husband the late Carlton Adams in care of young people at the Georgia Sheriffs Boys Ranch.
Survivors include her son and daughter in law, David C. and Debra Adams, two granddaughters, Karla and Eric Bennett, Erin and Brandon Cartrett, great granddaughter, Taylor Ann Bennett all of Valdosta, two brothers and sisters in law, Bernard and Edna Cooper, Wayne and Gail Cooper all of Hahira, three sisters and brothers in law, Lenelle and Julian Shierling, Laura and Charlie Flythe, Carol and Billy Folsom all of Valdosta, sister in law, Jean Cooper of Mt. Airy, GA. and a wide extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton T. Adams, a daughter, Pamela Catherine Adams and a brother, Charles Cooper.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Monday, January 31, 2011 at the Park Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Willie Beasley and Dr. Craig Rikard officiating. Mrs. Adams will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow in the Riverview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
