Carol Lee Sheridan

March 11, 1933 — December 31, 2011

Devoted Mother/Talented Musician/Victim Advocate
Carol Lee Moulton Sheridan, 78, of Valdosta, Georgia passed away on December 31, 2011 at Langdale Hospice House after a brief illness.
Carol was born on March 11, 1933 in Jackson, Michigan to the late Charles and Olive (Bachelder) Moulton. She graduated from Jackson High School and attended Michigan State University, studying music. Moving to Florida in the late 1950s, her early adult life was devoted to her family and to continuing her interest in music. On the family side, she provided support - and countless auto trips - for her three children's interest in music, art, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and baseball. Carol's musical pursuits included furthering her college education, teaching piano and leading church musical programs as the choral director and as an accomplished organist.
Her career interest shifted from music to social issues and she graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in psychology. She joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office and began work in the fledgling field of victim advocacy. As a Victim Advocate, Carol was introduced to the joys and challenges of responding to crime victims' needs when alerted by a beeper at any hour of any day. Her expertise led her to Jacksonville to help establish their victim advocacy program. Her achievements in victim advocacy were recognized by the Florida Network of Victim Witness Services when the Carol L. Sheridan award was established to annually recognize outstanding victim/witness services.
Carol's extensive knowledge of victim advocacy led to a position with the Department of Justice (DOJ) in Washington, D.C. At the DOJ, Carol again changed career focus and became a management consultant for the department. In this role, she was certified as a Zenger-Miller trainer and provided services and training to DOJ personnel across the U.S. Carol felt especially honored during this part of her career when she was invited to attend a reception at the White House. She retired from the DOJ in 1999, living in Maryland, Massachusetts, Florida and then Georgia.
Carol was devoted to her family, responding in times of crisis and spending much time and energy making holidays and other events special. She loved cooking and pleased many with her skill in the kitchen, particularly with her specialty cakes and cookies. Carol also enjoyed crafts such as scrapbooking and spent many hours in recent years knitting crafts for local charitable sales. Carol was a big sports fan, too, from taking in a game at Yankee Stadium to being glued to the television during the entire U.S. Open tennis matches.
Carol is survived by her three children; Alison McCormick of Valdosta, Weston Sheridan of Port Chester, NY and Rob (Susan) Sheridan of Valdosta. She also leaves behind grandchildren Brian McCormick, Caitlin McCormick and Patrick Sheridan; nieces Terry Moulton, Joyce Murphy and Debbie Moulton. Carol was preceded in death by her brother, Warren Moulton, and two grandchildren, Taylor Duany and Kendall Duany.
A memorial service will be held for Carol at the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Jerry Long will officiate.
