Mr. Carlos Edwin Byrd
Mr. Carlos Edwin Byrd, 91, of Inman, SC passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at the Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg, SC. He was born in Barney, GA on February 24, 1918 to the late Charles Henry and Sarah Jane (Folsom) Byrd. Mr. Byrd was a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and Textile Engineering, served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a survivor of the USS Yorktown (CV-5). He was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
At the time of his death he was survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma (Rogers) Byrd, three sons, Dr. Roger Byrd and his wife, Dr. Jill Blacharsh of Albuquerque, NM, Randy Byrd and his wife, Debbie of Pepperell, MA and Michael Dane Byrd and his wife, Sherilyn of Columbia, SC, four grandchildren, Cory Byrd, Sarah Byrd, Rion Byrd and Caroline Byrd, one great grandchild, August Simmons, one sister, Ann Alderman of San Diego, CA and one brother, Lane Byrd of Barney, GA.
Mrs. Thelma Rogers Byrd
Mrs. Thelma Rogers Byrd, 89, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 in Columbia, SC. She was a resident of Columbia Presbyterian Community. A native of Barney, GA she was the daughter of Walter Hicks Rogers and Leila Merchant Rogers. She was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Thelma was "Miss ABAC 1940" and was her class president. The caption beneath her ABAC annual photo is "Dynamite comes in small packages." She was a teacher at Pavo School (Brooks County, GA) and a second grade teacher for 20 years in Cobb County, GA. For the past 25 years Mr. And Mrs. Byrd resided in the New Prospect community in upper Spartanburg County. The youngest of eight children, she is survived by her sister, Janet Evarts of Atlanta. She was preceded in death on February 8, 2010 by her husband Carlos Edwin Byrd. Mrs. Byrd is also survived her three sons, Dr. Roger Byrd and his wife, Dr. Jill Blacharsh of Albuquerque, NM, Randy Byrd and his wife, Debbie of Pepperell, MA and Michael Dane Byrd and his wife Sherilyn of Columbia, SC, four grandchildren, Cory Byrd, Sarah Byrd, Rion Byrd and Caroline Byrd, two great grandchildren, August and Elias Simmons.
Memorial services for Mr. and Mrs. Byrd will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012 at four p. m. at the graveside at Campground Cemetery, Morven, GA with Reverend Bob Willis officiating. Contributions may be made to Columbia Presbyterian Community or to New Prospect Baptist Church, Inman, SC.
