Born in Sarasota, FL on February 14, 1936, to the late David & Lucy Findley Shapiro, the family soon moved to Homerville, where Mr. Shapiro grew up. In addition to flying, Mr. Shapiro also enjoyed sailing from the Twin Lakes Yacht Club and other places, earning the nickname, the "Capsize King".
