Burney Mack Harmon, Jr., 76, of Valdosta, departed this life at home after a lengthy illness on Friday, September 28, 2007. He was born in Mobile, Alabama on July 10, 1931 to the late Mary Edwards and the late B.M. Harmon, Sr. Mr. Harmon served in the United States Air force from 1951- 1953. He retired from the State of Georgia Department of Labor January 31, 1982 with 34 years service. At the time of his retirement he was the youngest person to retire from the State of Georgia with full benefits. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and the American Legion Post 13.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Julia Barrs Harmon; one son and daughter- in- law, Scott and Carmen Harmon; six grandchildren, Nicole Harmon Shaw (Hunter), Tyler Harmon, Courtney Harmon, Randi Harmon, Keith Harmon and Charity Harmon; two great grandchildren, Daniel and Kristin Shaw; nephew, David Stola; three sisters- in- law, Catherine Kent (Claude, deceased), Eunice Dugas (Charley), Frances Blanton (Arthur); one brother-in-law, Eddie Lee Barrs, Jr. (Penny); and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harmon was preceded in death by a son, Randall Keith Harmon; A Special Grandmother, Lillie Mae Platt; and a sister, Mary Lillian (Snookie) Strahern.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Dr. Dean Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends Sunday evening at the funeral home from 5 – 7 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Hospice of South Georgia or Grace Baptist Church.
