Michael Britt Watson, Sr., 68, of Naylor, died on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at South Georgia Medical Center, following a brief illness. Born in Valdosta on April 27, 1949, he was the son of the late F. B. Watson, Jr. and Helen Dees Watson. A lifelong resident of Lowndes County, Britt was a veteran of the U.S. Army. While serving in the Army, Britt was a part of the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) serving in the I Corps region and in the Central Highlands of the Republic of Vietnam. Britt served two tours in Vietnam and received many decorations including the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. After his Army service he returned to Valdosta and started working with The Southern Railroad and worked as a locomotive engineer for over 35 years, retiring from Norfolk Southern Railway. Soon after he began his railroad career he met the former Harriett Stewart and they were married in March of 1972. A member of First Baptist Church, Britt was an avid reader, studying topics that included Military History, the Railroad Industry and current events.
Survivors are his wife of 45 years, Harriett Stewart Watson of Naylor; son and daughter in law, Bud and Rachel Watson of Valdosta; daughter and son in law, Mary Martha and Nick Carter of Naylor; son and daughter in law, Lon and Katy Watson of Hahira; grandchildren, Kate Watson, Will Watson of Valdosta, Garrett Carter, Allison Carter of Naylor, Shelby Anne Watson of Hahira,; twin sister and brother in law, Sis and Bobby Jarrard of Hiawassee, sister, Becky Barker of Young Harris, brother and sister in law, John and Dora Watson of Valdosta, sister, Ruth Watson of Valdosta; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Buck Watson and Mack Watson.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 28, 2017, at eleven a.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Mac Weaver and Mr. Stephen Dees will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. Condolences may be conveyed online at www.mclanecares.com.
