Billie Smith Sims, 91, of Valdosta, died on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Valdosta on October 26, 1926, she is the daughter of the late Ernest Smith & Esther Boone Smith. Mrs. Sims was a graduate of Valdosta High School and Huntington College in Birmingham, AL. In her younger years, she enjoyed many activities such as golf, tennis, swimming, photography, archery, and woodworking. After college, she taught school in Jennings, Florida for five years and then returned to Valdosta and worked at Boyette Motors as a bookkeeper for several years. In 1956 she married John M. Sims, and they were married for 48 years, until his death in 2004. She assisted her husband on their dairy farm Sims Dairy for many years, even operating an ice cream truck called “Freezer Fresh Treats” in the mid 1960’s. The Sims traveled all over the continental United States, both attending Young Farmers Meetings and sightseeing. Mrs. Sims attended the chapel at Fellowship Home, where she has lived for several years.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Brad & Lyndal Sims, Jack & Deby Sims, all of Valdosta, John Bonner of Phoenix City, AL, Montine & David Foutz of Valdosta, David & Sharon Noel of Rabun Gap, Susan Temples, Seab & Pam Temples, and Seth Temples, all of Valdosta. She is preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, Margie Smith Temples, Virginia Smith Noel and nephews, Sam Temples, and James Bonner.
A graveside service for Mrs. Sims will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mr. John LaHood will officiate. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Georgia Sheriffs Boys Ranch, at 5671 Boys Ranch Rd. Hahira, GA 31632.
