Billie Dudley Lanier Schwiebert, 94, died on Thursday, February 9, 2006, at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Billie was born on September 9, 1911 at Bemis, Georgia to William Eli and Julia (Haigwood) Dudley. Her family had lived in this area since her grandfather came to Valdosta after the War Between The States, and began buying and selling land, including the land which is now Moody Air Force Base. Billie’s father was born in Valdosta on Forrest Street.
Billie grew up in Valdosta, attending Valdosta High School and Valdosta State Woman’s College. She lived in Florida for a time, first Fort Myers and then in Gainesville, but returned to Valdosta, to her roots and her family in 2001.
Billie was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Lanier in 1948 and her husbands, Mac Lanier in 1967 and Dr. Ernest G. Schwiebert in 2000. She is survived by her nieces, Gwen Watson of Lakeland, Judy Strayhorn of Valdosta, Mary Ann Hogan of Brooksville, Florida, Nancy Mongoven of Dillsboro, North Carolina, Janice Woodall of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, and nephew, George Wallace of Rome; great nephews, Lee Watson of Valdosta, Charlie Watson of Lakeland, Joey Watson of Douglas, Tim Johnson and Dudley Johnson of Valdosta, great nieces, Jackie Coker of Valdosta, Pam Bibb, Beth Gibbon, Amy Oyler and Kristen Wolfe of Rome, and numerous other nieces and nephews; special friends, Chuck and Joan Meyer.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Richard Pieplow and Reverend Robert Besalski will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday prior to the service from 1 – 2 p.m. Burial will at Ft. Myers Cemetery on Tuesday, February 14, 2006.
