Betty Williams Montague

March 6, 1922 — December 9, 2014

Betty Chloe Williams Montague, 92, of Valdosta, died on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at her residence. Born in Atlanta, GA to the late John Harmon & Ruby Cecile Williams, she and her family moved to Valdosta when she was still a child. She went on to attend Emory Junior College here in Valdosta and then graduated from Shorter College with an education degree. Her first job was working as a teacher in Lanier County Schools. She soon returned to Valdosta and began work as a social worker with the Department of Family and Children's Services for several years. After this, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Valdosta City Schools. Mrs. Montague was very active in the community. She was a member of the Garden Club that met at the Crescent; she was past president of the Readers Forum. She and her husband served the community and Moody Air Force Base on the Chamber of Commerce's Red Carpet Committee. A member of the Ocean Pond Fishing Club, she loved attending social events there all of her life. Mrs. Montague was a member of West End Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Helen Montague Towles of Pensacola; three sons and daughters in law, John and Diane Montague of Valdosta, William & Kim Montague of Hahira, and Tom & Nancy Montague of Valdosta; eleven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters in law, Mrs. Betty Tracy of Keystone Heights, FL, and Mrs. Kate Montague of Gainesville, FL, and a brother and sister in law, Halbert & Linda Montague of Tampa, FL; and three cousins, John (Sue) Mosely of Ozark, AL, Bobby Mosely of Greenville, SC, and Howard (Ann) Owens, Pensacola, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Montague and her son Robert L. (Bobby) Montague.

A graveside service for Mrs. Montague will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Sunset Hill Cemetery. Rev. John Akers and Rev. Aaron Turner will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Georgia Sheriffs Boys Ranch or the Partnership Cancer Fund.
