Betty Phillips Googe, 85, of Valdosta, died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at Fellowship Home. Mrs Googe was born December 29, 1927, in Dothan, Alabama to the late Henry Clay Phillips and Alma Pauline Phillips. She attended Lumber City High School, Middle Georgia College, and graduated from Valdosta State College. She was married to Oliver Callus Googe until his death on October 20, 1971.
Mrs. Googe taught at Valdosta High School from 1963 to 1971 and at Valwood School from 1973 to 2000, where she also served as Dean and where a scholarship is named in her honor.
Mrs. Googe's relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, began at an early age. She first taught Sunday school when she was just 17 and continued leading men and women to Christ throughout her life. Over her 40 years as an educator, she remained passionate about every student she taught and dedicated her life to inspiring in them the same sense of wonder she always possessed. Her gift of faith and love of teaching others will be missed by all those who knew her.
Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Googe Edwards of Valdosta; her grandson, Judge John Kent Edwards, Jr., of Valdosta; her granddaughter, Kelly Edwards Copeland and grandson-in-law, Benjamin Irvin Copeland, Jr., and her great-grandchildren, Edith Clara Copeland, Alma Paris Copeland, Olivia Iris Copeland, Julia Bettyann Copeland, and Benjamin Irvin Copeland, III, of Marshallville, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Eloise Philips Wooten, Doris Phillips Sears, and brother, Henry Clay Phillips. Thanks are given to those who supported her stay at Langdale Place. Special thanks to her constant caregivers Mary Gardner, Phyllis Hatcher, Buddy Lahood, Dr. Larry Harrell, and all those who comforted her in her final days at Fellowship Home.
