Betty Bass Thackrey, 80, of Valdosta died Monday, October 28, 2013 at Langdale Hospice House after a lengthy illness. She was born on February 10, 1933 in Sandersville, Georgia to the late George Marion Meeks and Irene Jenny Brown Meeks and had lived in Valdosta since 1961. Mrs. Thackrey was a member of the Northside Baptist Church and a retired educator at Lowndes County High School where she taught Home Economics and served as chairman of the department. She volunteered with Hospice of South Georgia and the Meals on Wheels Program. Mrs. Thackrey was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed travelling.
Survivors include her three sons and two daughters in law, Gary, Jr. and Martha Bass of Marietta, Michael Bass of Valdosta and his companion, Sue Swanson of Bradenton, FL, Mark and Michele Bass of Cumming, her grandchildren, Jennifer Bass of Marietta, Justin Bass of Marietta, Jacob Bass of Cumming, Tiffani and her husband, Stephen Stokes of Greenville, SC, Katy Thackrey of Jonesboro, GA, Andrew Thackrey of Greenville, SC, Evan Malone of Athens, GA, great grandchildren, Isaac Lowry of Marietta, Madeline Stokes of Greenville, SC, her brothers and sisters in law, Marion and Alice Meeks of Sandersville, Earl and Martha Meeks of Columbus, GA, Mack and Charlotte Meeks of Athens, GA, George and Lois Meeks of Sandersville, GA, her sister and brother in law, Elaine and Kenneth Adams of Tennille, GA, the father of her sons and caretaker during her recent illness, Gary Bass, Sr. of Valdosta, stepson, Barton Wayne Thackrey of McDonough, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Logan Wayne Thackrey, her stepdaughter, Ginger Thackrey and a brother, Troy Meeks.
Funeral services will be held at 3pm, Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3pm at Northside Baptist Church, 200 E. Park Ave., Valdosta, GA 31602 with Rev. Bob Willis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services will be held at 3pm, Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Washington County Memorial Gardens in Sandersville, GA with the Rev. Jack Key officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Northside Baptist Church or to Langdale Hospice House, 2263 Pineview Dr., Valdosta, GA 31602.
