Betty J. Smith

April 11, 1932 — June 16, 2006

Betty J. Smith, 74, of Valdosta, died suddenly of a stroke on Friday, June 16, 2006, at South Georgia Medical Center. Born in Atlanta on April 11, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Vertyce Mae Mobley and John D. Brooks. Mrs. Smith received her Masters in Special Education, in 1986, at Valdosta State University. She was very involved in the artist community in Valdosta, and was a long-time member and served as past President of the Southern Artist’s League. Mrs. Smith was also a member of the Valdosta Garden Club, and a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the “55 & Alive” Choir.

Survivors are her husband, Wilson (Bill) Smith of Valdosta; three daughters, Lydia Glisan of Wimberley, Texas, Lynda Richardson of Bulverde, Texas, Vertyce Key of Valdosta; a son, Robert C. Smith, Jr. of Valdosta; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert C. Smith, Sr.

There will be a viewing at the Carson McLane Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Reverend Thomas Mason, Jr., will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family invites friends to join them for a lunch reception at the First United Methodist Church, following the graveside service.
