Betty Dowling Jones, 75 of Lake Park, died in Birmingham, AL on Friday, November 5, 2004 following a short and severe illness. Born in Hoboken, on July 14, 1929, to the late Wiley & Cordia Dowling, Mrs. Jones made her home in Lake Park for the past 12 years. Through the years, the Jones family had lived in several cities in Florida and Georgia, and wherever they lived, Mrs. Jones was active in her church. In Tampa, she was active at Palma Ceia Baptist Church; in Tallahassee, she was active at First Baptist Church; in Gainesville, she was active at First Baptist Church. In Valdosta Mrs. Jones was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, participating in the Faith Ministry, the “We Care” Ministry, her Sunday School Class, the Children’s Bible Drill, the Women’s Bible Study and Ministries, the Missions Ministry and the Greeter Ministry, which she especially loved. She was a strong supporter of the University of Florida Gators School of Pharmacy and the Athletics Program. She was also an active participant in her cancer survivors group and McLane’s New Hope Support Group. Throughout the years Mrs. Jones was known to those she met as a very kind and compassionate person, and many family members and friends found that she was a loving and dedicated caregiver during times of crisis or sickness.

Mrs. Jones is dearly loved by her family and friends. Survivors include a son Dr. Howard Jones, of Lake Park; a daughter and son-in-law, Dr.’s Pamela & Kevin Sims, of Birmingham, AL; four grandchildren, Rex H. Jones of Birmingham, Elizabeth L. Jones of Valdosta, Virginia Rhodes (Brian) Huffman and Lance E. Rhodes all of Birmingham; a great granddaughter, Aubrey B. Huffman, of Birmingham; two sisters and a brother in law, Beatrice & Bill Jones, of Baytown, TX; and Valeria Plymale of Douglas; two brothers and sisters in law, Fred and Cora Bell Dowling, of Hoboken, and Vernon D. & Mary Dowling of Hazlehurst. Also surviving are two sisters in law, Mary Dowling, of Douglas; Prim Dowling of McRae; a brother in law and his spouse, Carey & Myrtle Jones, of Jesup; and two sisters in law, Bess Jones, of Valdosta, and Von Jones of Hazlehurst, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Mrs. Jones is preceded in death by her husband, Jack H. Jones, two brothers, Edwin Dowling and Perry Dowling and a sister, Dolores Drury.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Valdosta. Dr. Phil West and Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate. The graveside committal will be held at Douglas City Cemetery, in Douglas, GA at 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. at Carson McLane Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to First Baptist Church in Valdosta.
