BENNY MITCHAM, 71, of Valdosta died Thursday, June 9, 2005. He was born on January 22, 1934 in Ty Ty, Georgia to Nell Fargason Mitcham and the late Mercer Hatton Mitcham and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Mr. Mitcham was a member of the First Christian Church where he served as Elder and a member of the choir. He graduated from Valdosta State College in 1959 and was employed by the C & S Bank in the early 1960’s. Mr. Mitcham was the owner of the Village Shop from 1967-1985 and was currently associated with Aurora Casket Company. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Frankfurt Germany as an dental assistant, charter member of Pi Kappa Phi and a member of the Valdosta Jaycees where he had served as President.
Survivors include his mother, Nell Mitcham of Montezuma, one son and daughter in law, Frankie and Karen Mitcham of Jacksonville, Fla., two daughters and a son in law, Courtney Mitcham of Texas and Elinor and Andrew McAree of St. Petersburg, Fla., two grandsons, Justin Mitcham and Nick Sobek, stepson and stepdaughter in law, Jason and Leigh Jordan of Tifton, uncle, J. L. Fargason, cousins, Sandra Dean and Cathy Detamore, special friend, Judy Ellis of Lake Park.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Monday, June 13, 2005 at First Christian Church with Dr. Milton West officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3pm at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton. Mr. Mitcham will lie in state the church for one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-6pm at the funeral home.
