Becky Ruth Swink Dalzotto, 72, of Lake Park, died on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 at home from Alzheimer’s and Dementia related complications. She was born to Benny Adams Swink and Lt. Col. Lloyd John Swink, in Ft. Knox, KY, on June 17, 1947. She graduated from Lowndes High School and studied nursing at Grady Memorial Nursing program. Becky’s life was full of adventure. As a baby she was smuggled out of Korea in a manure boat, at the beginning of the Korean War. In her teen years she spent a year in Alaska as an au pair to young cousins and also survived a large earthquake. She even became a fulltime medical missionary in Haiti. She returned to the U.S. to post-partum and hospice care. Over her 35 years long nursing career she delivered babies, comforted mothers (as a labor and delivery and postpartum nurse), provide primary care support to the impoverished of Haiti (as a missionary nurse) and provide palliative care for the dying (as a hospice nurse). If asked about the proudest moments of her life, she would answer, the birth of her son, her conversion to Christianity, graduation from nursing school, and service to others.
Becky’s friendship and legacy of giving were evident in those she mentored both in the church and professionally. Some of whom would have never taken the next steps without her encouragement. This continued until dementia caused a loss of self and stole her ability to be of service to others. Her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in 2006 began a long battle with a disease that slowly erased memories of those she loved and cared for. While the world around her did the same. Some rose to the occasion to maintain a relationship even unto the end, while others found it very difficult. A huge thank you to the nurses and staff at Hospice of South Georgia, where she worked until her diagnosis. The kindness and care they showed was so very appreciated.
Becky is survived by her only child, Jorge Benjamin DalZotto, a sister Georgia Swink Smith, nieces Sally Smith and Sandy Smith Cole, cousins Mary Jane, Robin & Bobby Yorke, their children, grandchildren, loving family, and friends.
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019 at New Life Community Church of Lake Park, GA, where she was a member.
