Barney Dixon Griffis, Jr.

Barney D. Griffis Jr., 83, of Hahira died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Brooks County Hospital in Quitman after a lengthy illness. He was born in Savannah, Georgia on January 30, 1925 to the late Barney Griffis Sr. and Ruth Howell Griffis. He lived most of his life in Lowndes County and for 18 years was a self employed landscape grader. He became the first grounds superintendent for Valdosta State University and retired from there in 1986. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, a member of the American Legion and was a member of the Hahira United Methodist Church.

Mr. Griffis is survived by his wife of sixty six years, Lucy S. Griffis of Hahira, three sons and daughters in law, Jimmy and Sandy Griffis of Lake Park, Gary and Brenda Griffis of Valdosta, Alan and Jackie Griffis of Quitman, grandchildren, Chris Griffis, Mindy Fletcher (Robert), Greg Griffis (Chanyn), great grandchildren, Colby, Danielle and Stephen Fletcher, Ceridwyn and Rowan Griffis, step grandchildren, Bleau Crawford (Jennifer) and Travis Crawford, step great grandchildren, Summer Huffmaster and Brody Crawford and Brandon Dent, one brother, Donald Griffis of Tampa, FL, one sister, Helen Northcutt of Valdosta. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Paul Griffis and Bobby Griffis and one sister, Marie Peck.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at ten thirty a. m. in the chapel of the Carson McLane Funeral Home with Reverend Ken Morgan and Reverend John Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from six until eight p. m. Monday at the funeral home.
