Barbara Sorrell

Barbara Sorrell, 84, of Young Harris, GA, passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023. She was born in Adel, GA, on November 19, 1938, to the late Wilma Southerland and Janie Lee Crumpton Southerland. Mrs. Sorrell grew up in Hahira, and graduated from Hahira High School, was a cheerleader and a member of the chorus. Mrs. Sorrell started dating J.D. Sorrell in high school and they were married on June 21, 1957. For many years she was a Teacher’s Aide at Hahira Elementary School as her kids grew up. Later on, she worked for several years as a floral designer at Zants. Even after retiring from Zants, she loved making beautiful things with flowers and other crafts for family and friends.

Mrs. Sorrell is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dean and Michele Sorrell, of Hahira; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Andy Mathis, of Young Harris, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Tammy Sorrell, of Nashville, GA; son Lee Sorrell, of Nashville, GA; brother, Bill Southerland, of Moultrie; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Peggy Southerland; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Angela Southerland, of Savannah; her grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Dalton) Dillingham, Peyton Sorrell, Hunter Sorrell, Jacob (Jake) Mathis; her great-grandchild, Rylee Dillingham; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend since high school Ruth Terry. She was preceded in death by her husband J.D. Sorrell, grandchild Jordan Sorrell, and sister-in-law Margaret Southerland.

A funeral service for Mrs. Sorrell will be held at 11am on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Martin McLane Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery in Moultrie, GA. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
